People looking to buy a gaming laptop is probably about to expend a little fortune on a computer, because these beasts are expensive. Quad-core high-performance laptop: Dell Precision M6400

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

If you are looking for a really powerful workstation laptop, look no more: you have the Dell Precision M6400.

Dell Precision M6400

Laptops are not as powerful as desktop computers, but this workstation laptop has an unprecedented power:

  • Processor: up to Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 (2.5 GHz, quad-core, 1066 MHz FSB, 12 MB de cache).
  • RAM Memory: up to 16 GB DDR3.
  • Graphics card: up to  Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M (1 GB).

It’s the first laptop sporting a native quad-core processor, and the graphics card is the professional equivalent to a 9800M GTX. But performance is expensive: while you can buy the basic model from 2299 $, the top configuration costs around 7000 € (16 GB configuration not yet available in the US). And keep in mind that, if you need the maximum performance for games, you are going to get more fps in laptops with dual graphics cards, such as the gaming laptops offered by Dell/Alienware and Cizmo.

Laptop processor benchmark comparison (Intel Core 2 X9100, X9000, T9600, T9500, P9500, T9400, T9300, P8600, P8400, T8300, T8100, P7350, Atom N270)

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

This laptop processor benchmark comparison is similar to the laptop graphics card performance comparison: it gets data from the benchmark tables at Notebookcheck, reduces the amount of data involved (limiting the graph to the most usual processors) and plots them. The graph represents the scores in the 3DMark 06 CPU test, because this benchmark is available for most processors.

Complete processor listing: Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 and X9000, Intel Core 2 Duo T9600, T9500, T9400, T9300, P9500, P8600, P7350, T8300, T8100, T7700, T7500, T7500, T7250, T5550, T5470 and U7700, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390 and T2330, Intel Atom N270, AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-84, AMD Turion X2 RM-70, AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64 and TL-56.

laptop processor benchmark comparison

The case of processors is more difficult than that of graphics cards: the difference in real-life performance is small, even more if we take into account than in many tasks the bottleneck is the hard disk performance, and powerful processors are expensive. If you need the best possible performance for professional purposes, have a look to the original data, that covers more benchmarks (SuperPi, Cinebench R10…). In addition, you will find there some quad-core desktop processors, that are the processors of choice for processor-intensive tasks. Quad-core laptop processors have been announced, but there are not available benchmarks at the moment.

As usual, in case of doubt you can ask in the message boards.

Basic laptop guide

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

After the guide to buy a cheap laptop you have the basic laptop guide: it is intended to users that can afford a bit more and want a laptop more up-to-date and with better specs.  This guide belongs too to the laptop section, that tries to guide users towards the best laptop for their needs and budget. The laptop section is still in development and will be completed in a few weeks (at least I hope so!). Currently you can see the netbook comparison, the cheap laptop guide and the basic laptop guide. More guides are coming.

It is impossible to cover all the possibilities so, in case of doubt, use the message boards to ask for assistance, to tell us about good deals you have found or to talk about anything related to laptops.

Cheap laptop guide

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

People looking to buy a cheap laptop can finish easily with an old, underpowered laptop that is too expensive for the performance it offers. I just posted a guide to buy a cheap laptop. It is not a compilation of good deals, but a guide to what to look for. This guide belongs to the laptop section, that tries to guide users towards the best laptop for their needs and budget. The laptop section is still in development and will be completed in a few weeks (at least I hope so!). Currently you can see the netbook comparison, the cheap laptop guide and the basic laptop guide. More guides are coming.

The best laptop

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

A lot of people asks about “the best laptop“. I firmly think that there is no “best laptop”, because each user has different needs, but this is still a good question. What is, in your opinion, the best laptop? It has to be a very powerful one, but still highly portable. For me, and based on specs (sadly there are not many review of this laptop), it currently is the Dell Precision M4400.

  • It is a FAST laptop: can be configured with up to an Intel Core 2 Extreme X9100 (3,06 GHz) and 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drives, and SSD are also available. The graphics card, an Nvidia Quadro FX 7700M is the professional equivalent to a GeForce 9600M GT.
  • It is not heavy: at 15.4″ and 2.7 kg, it is reasonably portable.
  • It is highly configurable: you can adapt it to your needs and budget. You can get screens from 1280×800 to 1920×1200, a wide array of available storage options…

What is the best laptop for you? Tell us here or in the forums.

Sony AW series: the super-notebook

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Sony launches the Vaio AW series, sporting a 18.4″ screen and weighting 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs). The top model of the series, dubbed “super-notebook” by Sony, with code AW11XU/Q (in Europe, not yet announced in the US), presents an interesting new feature: a conventional 500 GB hard drive (4200 rpm) paired with 2 64 GB SSD in RAID 0 configuration. This configuration offers 128 GB of extremely fast storage, plus 500 additional GB at standard speeds. The rest of the configuration is also first-class: Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor (2.8 GHz), 4 GB de RAM, high-quality monitor at 1920×1080, BD drive (playing and recording), 2.1 speakers… The graphics card is not the most powerful in the market, it is a GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB DDR3, but we have to bear in mind that it is not a gaming laptop, but a multimedia one, aimed also to video and graphics professionals.

sony vaio aw

It’s with no doubt a great laptop (maybe not a super-notebook), but the price is (maybe, just maybe) too high for most of us: 3499 € (2499 £) at Sony Style (price unknown in the US right now, but you get the idea). Other models in the series are more reasonably priced.
