Sony AW series: the super-notebook

Sony launches the Vaio AW series, sporting a 18.4″ screen and weighting 3.9 kg (8.6 lbs). The top model of the series, dubbed “super-notebook” by Sony, with code AW11XU/Q (in Europe, not yet announced in the US), presents an interesting new feature: a conventional 500 GB hard drive (4200 rpm) paired with 2 64 GB SSD in RAID 0 configuration. This configuration offers 128 GB of extremely fast storage, plus 500 additional GB at standard speeds. The rest of the configuration is also first-class: Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor (2.8 GHz), 4 GB de RAM, high-quality monitor at 1920×1080, BD drive (playing and recording), 2.1 speakers… The graphics card is not the most powerful in the market, it is a GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB DDR3, but we have to bear in mind that it is not a gaming laptop, but a multimedia one, aimed also to video and graphics professionals.

It’s with no doubt a great laptop (maybe not a super-notebook), but the price is (maybe, just maybe) too high for most of us: 3499 € (2499 £) at Sony Style (price unknown in the US right now, but you get the idea). Other models in the series are more reasonably priced.
