HP has released the successor of the HP Mini Note PC 2133, the HP Mini 1000, that jumps to the 10″ format and to the Intel Atom processors.

The HP Mini 1000 can already be purchased at the HP Home & Home Office Store from 399 $, and you can read a few reviews: at Laptop Magazine and PC Magazine, in addition to the “hands on” at Engadget, that shows some pictures of one of the operating system options, Ubuntu-Linux based (the other option is Windows XP).

Update: more reviews. Computer Shopper, PC World, CNET.

Far Cry 2 on laptops benchmarks: what graphics card do you need to run it?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Far Cry 2

So Far Cry 2 is already here and you want to know if your laptop is going to play it fine… Or maybe you are going to purchase a new laptop and want to be sure that it is powerful enough to play Far Cry 2 at high quality. People are posting benchmarks here and there and now we have some information.

Can be played with any current low-end dedicated graphics card. Users are reporting playable frame rates (25-30 FPS) with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 at 1024×600 and low settings. Other users are happily playing it with an Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS (at 720×480 and 2x AA).

It is very enjoyable with any good graphics card. Users are reporting good frame rates (over 35 FPS) with an overclocked Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT DDR2 at 1280×800 and a mixture of High and Very High settings.

High-end dual cards get a lot of performance. Users are reporting 50+ FPS with a Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTX SLI at 1680×1050 and Ultra High settings.

As said in Guru3D: if you can play Crysis, you can play Far Cry 2 better.

Sony Vaio TT laptop review (TT190UBX, at CNET)

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

11.1″ laptops from Sony are, probably, the best known of this brand, and the time of a refresh has come. So the new TT series replaces the old TZ one.

CNET has the privilege of being first publishing a review of a laptop in the TT series: the TT190UBX that, at 4344 $, represents the top of the line and sports dual SSD drives and BD.

Not all the laptops in the series are as expensive: they can be ordered from 2094.99 $ at Sony. If you are in the UK, you can get yours from £ 1349 at Sony UK.

MacBook now up to 2.4 GHz

There is a lot of interest about the graphics card of the new aluminium Macbook, but there is little information available at the moment. I will try to summarize here the available benchmarks:

3DMark 06

  • Notebookcheck estimates a score of 2000 at default settings. No info about how the estimation was calculated. 3DMark scores of other cards.
  • At the review of the new Macbook, PC Magazine publishes scores of 2344 at 1024×768, AA/AF off, and 2044 at 1280×800, 0x/4x.

Games

In addition, AnandTech publishes a comparison of current integrated graphics, including the GeForce 9400, but the desktop version. The difference in performance between the desktop and Macbook versions of the GeForce 9400 is unknown.

Did you find more benchmarks? Post a comment and tell us.

Review: new Macbook (PC Magazine)

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

PC Magazine is first publishing a review of the new Apple Macbook.

A score of 3.5/5 is not bad, but it is nothing spectacular either…

You can also find a mini-review at Laptop Magazine.

Apple launches the new Macbook and Macbook Pro

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

As expected, the new Macbook and Macbook Pro were launched at the Apple keynote yesterday. The Macbook has experienced the most important changes, now becoming a miniature Macbook Pro:

New Macbook and Macbook Pro

Left: Macbook Pro (15.4″); right: Macbook (13.3″). Source: Engadget.

The new 13.3″ Macbook has an aluminium finish and a Nvidia GeForce 9400M GS graphics card with 256 MB DDR3 memory. At the moment there are no published benchmarks for this card, but it is likely close in performance to the 9300M GS (Macbook Air has got this card, too). The weight has been reduced from 2.3 to 2 kg, the screen is LED-retroiluminated and the platform has been upgraded to Intel Centrino 2. But it does not have FireWire port, now. The new Macbook is available from 1299 $.

Both the Macbook and Macbook Pro have lost the button of the trackpad: now the whole surface of the trackpad can be used as a button, programming different areas for different actions.

An interesting novelty in the Macbook Pro is the simultaneous presence of two graphics cards: the same GeForce 9400M GS as in the Macbook, and a 9600M GT. Switching between cards enables you to choose high performance or long battery life. You have to log out to switch cards. The new Macbook Pro is available from 1999 $.

They are already available at the Apple Store:
