About laptop reviews: more for less or higher quality laptops?

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

I have noted a strong tendency in laptop reviews to give high scores to laptops from Acer, Gateway and other brands, because they give you more bang for the buck, while laptops from other brands such as Toshiba get low scores because the competition offers more for less. But if we have a look at this recent laptop reliability study, Acer and Gateway laptops are a 50% more prone to malfunction than the ones from Asus or Toshiba (by the way, am I the only one to be surprised by the position of Lenovo laptops?). So, what laptop would you pick?

I understand that a review has to rely only on actual information of the laptop the reviewer has in his/her hands, and you can’t know for how long is the laptop going to last, but maybe the “bang for the buck” should influence less the final score…

Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, GT 240M and GTS 250M benchmarks

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

The Nvidia GeForce GT 230M and 240M are becoming quite popular in mainstream and multimedia laptops, while the GTS 250M is being introduced in high-end and gaming laptops. So I think it’s interesting to have a look at the available benchmarks (mainly from Notebookjournal.de and Notebookcheck).

The GT 230M and 240M perform quite similarly, giving enough performance in most games at low resolutions and medium or high settings. The GT 240M gives 10-20% more performance than the 230M. The problem is that the good ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 is faster than the GT 240M, sometimes by a good margin. Of course both are faster than the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570. The GT 230M is used in many HP Pavilion laptops, such as the dv6t Quad , dv7t Quad and dv8t (UK link).

The GTS 250M could look like a gaming card because of the GTS prefix, but in many cases its performance is way lower than that of the GTX 260M, specially at high resolutions, and in many cases it’s closer to the one of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670. The GTS 250M is often found in Core i7 laptops.

At the end of the day, the decision is going to depend a lot on pricing and the actual games you play, but generally speaking:

GTX 260M >> GTS 250M > HD 4670 > HD 4650 > GT 240M > GT 230M > GT 220M >> HD 4570

Cheap gaming laptops: refurbished Asus G71GX (P8700, GTX 260M) for 935 USD

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

This is really a good price! 935 USD for a 17″ gaming laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M graphics card, Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 processor (2.53 GHz), 6 GB RAM, 500 GB HD… It’s a refurbished laptop I just found at Buy.com.

Asus G71GX-RX05 Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 17.1 WXGA, 6GB, 500GB HDD, HDMI, Webcam, Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit - Refurbished

Cheap gaming laptops: Asus G60VX with Nvidia GTX 260M for 999 USD

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Gaming laptops can be really expensive, but sometimes you can find laptops that are good for gaming and offer a nice price/performance ratio. Such is the case of the Asus G60VX you can find at Best Buy for 999 USD: while it only has an Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 (2,1 GHz), its Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M is quite a powerful card for the price. And for only 50 USD more, you can have the P-7915u FX with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 at 2.53 GHz.

In case you can’t afford one of these, laptops with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 should to be cheaper and provide a reasonably good gaming experience if you don’t need a high graphical quality, but don’t count on play Crysis on High.
