Netbooks (cheap ultraportables) are becoming very popular, but they are not for everyone: small size and low performance are important limitations that have to be taken into account. In addition, the number of different netbooks in the market is getting confusing. So I think some of you may find useful my netbook comparison. It includes the following netbooks: Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC 901 and 1000H, Dell Inspiron Mini 9, HP 2133 Mini-note PC and MSI Wind.

MSI Wind available for preorder in the US at Buy.com

That’s right, Buy.com lists 5 different models of MSI Wind available for preorder: black, white and pink, with 3- or 6-cell battery, and priced 479 to 499 USD. There is no estimated shipping date, but you can ask to be alerted when it’s available.

MSI Wind video

CNET Crave shows a video of the 10″ MSI Wind (keep in mind that there is going to be a 9″ version too) with Windows XP. It seems a really good machine, and the monitor is matte, a very important feature for laptops to be used often outdoors.

MSI Wind: pictures and specifications

It looks like rumors are being confirmed, so we have more data about the low-cost ultraportable from MSI (MSI Wind).

Here are the specs currently known :

  • Monitor: 8.9″ and 10″, 1024×600, LED backlight.
  • Processor: Intel Atom 1.6 GHz.
  • RAM memory: 1 GB.
  • Storage: 80 GB hard disk drive, SD card reader.
  • Graphics card: Intel GMA 950.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11g, Ethernet, mic input, phone output, 3 USB, VGA.
  • Integrated webcam (1.3 Mp) and microphone.
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP.
  • Weight: about 1.2 kg (2.6 lb).

Its a very interesting ultraportable, but at the moment, pricing and availability remain unknown.
