The Intel Core i7 upgrade for the Alienware M11x is well worth it (in some games)

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Clerarly the older processors are OK for most games, but I was amazed by the performance improvement of the Core i7 640M processor over the older Pentium SU4100 (even overclocked at 1.7 GHz) in some games, namely Shattered Horizon and Battlefield: Bad Company 2. So if you can afford it and don’t mind losing some battery life (45 min of Internet use), go for the Core i7 option.

Update: Looks like Dell has released a software update that gives an extra 45 minutes of battery life, so the Core i5/i7 models get much closer to the original Pentium/Core 2 Duo version.

Apple working on an 11.6-inch Macbook Air?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

That would be a very interesting laptop. But I’m intrigued about the graphics card Apple would put inside: I don’t think they could use the same Nvidia GeForce 320M in the latest Macbooks without compromising battery life and temperatures… Anyway, I couldn’t help thinking on an iPad with keyboard…

Alienware M11x launched and reviewed

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

So the 11.6-inch gaming notebook Alienware M11x is finally here! This is a very powerful beast for so tiny a size (4.5 pounds)!

Alienware M11x

It’s already available for preorder from 799 USD in the US and from 749 GBP in the UK (for other countries have a look at the official announcement) with the basic configuration of an Intel Pentium Dual Core SU4100, 2 GB RAM and 160 GB HD @5400 rpm (320 GB @7200 rpm in the UK). Going for an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300, 4 GB RAM and 320 GB HD @7200 rpm is going to cost you 1024 USD (868 GBP in the UK). And of course, the Nvidia GeForce GT 335M 1 GB GDDR3 in all configurations.

The small gaming laptop has already been reviewed at Hardware Heaven and IGN Gear, and both are very impressed by the machine, that ran all the games thrown at it flawlessly at high settings, and battery life was almost 6 h of general use!

In my opinion it’s a great, great product. But I’m concerned about the ability of these CULV processors of running CPU-intensive games and scenarios, such as GTA4, Battlefield Bad Company 2, 25-man WOW raids and so, that maybe you would considering to do in thes ultraportable.

For more information, the forum members of Notebook Review have compiled a good amount of info about this small laptop in the Alienware M11x official thread.

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

It’s sexy, expensive and very, very light. But is it worth 1499 USD? The guys at Laptop Magazine have reviewed the Sony Vaio X and they have mixed feelings about it. If you are considering one of these ultra-light laptops, have a look at the review.

New Sony Vaio X, CW and L officially announced

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

So we have prices and specifications for these interesting computers:

The ultralight, ultrathin Sony Vaio X is not as expensive as it was expected (we expected up to 2000 USD). There are 2 configurations:

  • Common features include 11.1″ screen, 1.6 lb (0.7 kg) fiber carbon chassis, Intel Atom Z550 processor at 2.0 GHz and Intel GMA 500 graphics, integrated WWAN, GPS and 2 batteries: a slim one, providing around 3 h of battery life, and an extended one that’s much bigger and lasts for up to 14 h.
  • The 1299 USD model sports a 64 GB SSD, while the 1499 USD model sports a 128 GB one.
  • More info: Sony Vaio X
  • Pictures: Engadget

The Sony Vaio CW seems a replacement to the 14-inch Vaio CS. I was not very fond of the CS because it was heavy for a 14-inch laptop (5.7 lb, 2.6 kg), but the CW is lighter (5.3 lb, 2.4 kg) and has better optional graphics cards:

  • The 799 USD model sports an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 and a Nvidia GeForce G 210M.
  • The 849 USD model sports the same processor but a Nvidia GeForce GT 230M. It is not a powerful card, but good for gaming most games at Medium or even High details (depending on the game)
  • The 919 USD model adds a Blu-ray player/DVD burner combo.
  • More info: Sony Vaio CW
  • Pictures: Engadget

Finally, the Sony Vaio L is a 24″ all-in-one desktop computer with multitouch-enabled touchscreen.

  • The basic model (1299 USD) sports an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5400 and a Nvidia GeForce G 210M.
  • If you want more graphics performance, you have to pay 1799 USD for the model equipped with a Nvidia GeForce GT 240M, but it has a quad-core processor too (Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S).
  • More info: Sony Vaio L
  • Pictures: Engadget

Nothing about European models at the moment.

HP Pavilion dv2 with dual core processors and possible pricing of the Lenovo Ideapad S12 in Europe

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

If you live in the US you can already order the HP Pavilion dv2z with dual-core processors: either an AMD Athlon Neo X2 L335 for 25 USD over the MV-40, or an AMD Turion Neo X2 L625 (with twice the cache) for 75 USD. This new dv2z uses a newer chipset with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3200 instead of the older X1250 (Source: HP USA). I was told that the dual-core models are not going to be available in Spain (so probably in Europe) until December.

It seems that price of the Lenovo Ideapad S12, the 12″ ultraportable based on the Nvidia Ion platform, is going to be 379 € in Italy. In my opinion this price is very low compared with the usual prices in Spain, maybe computers are much cheaper in Italy… (Source: Notebook Italia).
